Researchers publish proof-of-concept study for COVID-19 detection via saliva screening

Hello everyone,

I would like to inform you about another great research publication involving the Cary 630 FTIR.

Researchers from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Australia, together with Agilent experts have published a proof-of-concept study that uses the Cary 630 FTIR for the detection of COVID-19 infections from saliva samples.

The study published in the journal Biomedicines in the special issue “Feature Papers in Molecular and Translation Medicine” investigated the pathophysiological response to a Covid-19 infection by means of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

Pathophysiological Response to SARS-CoV-2 Infection Detected by Infrared Spectroscopy Enables Rapid and Robust Saliva Screening for COVID-19

The researchers acquired infrared spectra of saliva samples collected from 104 individuals (44 healthy participants and 60 COVID-19 positive cases) following a quick and simple sample preparation requiring only ethanol and basic laboratory equipment.

Then a partial least squares discriminant analysis was used to develop a prediction model that allowed to discriminate between saliva samples of COVID-19 positive and COVID-19 negative individuals. The method shows a high sensitivity of 94.48% (leave-one-out cross validation). Remarkably, saliva samples of vaccinated but COVID-19 negative individuals were not wrongly classified.

Agilent and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute both published media releases this week:

There are also a number of social media posts that you can share or retweet:

Some media outlets have already shown their interest in this story and e.g., interviewed

Associate Professor Hill, the leading researcher of this study. So, we expect more coverage to come soon.

The Cary 630 FTIR is a great tool for infectious disease research and the investigation of biological samples as highlighted in our recently published flyer – The Agilent Cary 630 FTIR Spectrometer – Applications in infectious diseases research:

The flyer outlines the benefits of the Cary 630 FTIR for infectious disease research and provides summaries of relevant research publications in this field.

I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to Wesam Alwan and Claire Dawson who developed this nice Applications in infectious diseases research flyer.
